Drying and producing functional animal feeds using the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater

 

Dinnissen introduces new functionality

The Pegasus® Vacuum Coater allows producers in the animal feed and food sectors to create a vacuum environment within their production processes, enabling them to deal with a wide variety of challenges. At Victam from 2 to 5 May in Köln, Dinnissen will introduce two new applications for the vacuum coater: "Effectively introducing functional additives" and "Drying raw ingredients at low temperatures." The benefits of these innovations are the retention of taste and colour and preservation of the action of functional additives such as vitamins, minerals, ameliorators, taste enhancers, yeast and enzymes.

Creating a vacuum environment within production processes
Until now, the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater has been used primarily for adding essential ingredients such as aromas, oils, vitamins, minerals and enzymes to granules and extruded products. The Pegasus® Vacuum Coater makes it possible to add precisely the right amount of powder or liquid to each granule, after which the additive penetrates deeply into the granule. Batches of solid as well as liquid ingredients can be mixed quickly and very homogeneously using this technology. In addition, it is also possible to quickly add several coatings one after the other on granules and extruded products and to vary the effect of the vacuum process. For example, switching the vacuum on and off controls the depth to which the liquid additives penetrate into the granule.

Energy Booster via the addition of extra high percentages of oil or fat
The Pegasus® Vacuum Coater has also been demonstrated to be capable of adding much larger quantities of liquids, including oils and fats, to powders, granules and granulates than traditional production methods. Accordingly, the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater can be used as an energy booster during the production of, for example, cattle feed products. The vacuum coater is also a very flexible production tool. The sophisticated control programme makes it easy for producers to vary the vacuum settings and the injection of powders and liquids. As a result, the vacuum coater is suitable for producing a wide range of products on a single production line and switching between recipes is fast and convenient. This also applies to the production of small quantities.

Drying and introducing functional additives
At the Victam exhibition, Dinnissen will be introducing two new applications for the vacuum coater. The
first of these focuses on the introduction of functional additives after the heating stage. These additives include a wide range of substances such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics, taste enhancers, yeast and other enhancers, which can be added to powders, granules and granulates. Functional active ingredients can be processed as powders or liquids and are always added in the vacuum coater after the heating stage. This new functionality of the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater therefore ensures that heat-sensitive substances remain active after being added to the product. Another advantage of introducing functional additives in the vacuum coater is that the (often very expensive) additives are dosed extremely precisely and homogeneously. The second new application introduced by Dinnissen focuses on drying ingredients in the vacuum coater. Dinnissen's innovation makes clever use of the natural science principle that substances reach their boiling point at a lower temperature in a vacuum. Consequently, the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater is capable of removing moisture from products at lower temperatures. This new drying functionality of the vacuum coater makes it possible to retain the taste, colour and function of active substances such as vitamins and enzymes. Of course, the new drying functionality of the Pegasus® Vacuum Coater can be combined with its existing functionalities in a single process step.
